Ok, so this is a bit weird… I noticed last week I could hear my car charging from the lounge, yet not the hallway (which is closer)… After some investigation, I discovered that my TV was actually squealing, the same sound as the car charger (though much quieter). Turn the TV off, it stops. Turn it back on, it comes back.
Only seems to happen while the charger is being used!
Any ideas?
I did note that the installer of the charger ran the cable inside the same piece of trunking as the cable from the meter to the consumer unit (since the charger is next to the meter on the outside wall). I asked the Chargemaster guy about this interfering, but he said it wouldn’t, and that he’d have done it the same way.
Is this normal? Is it likely caused by the cables being together? (I can probably test this at the weekend by popping one out)
May 11, 2015 at 21:28 #17379TV, no but the microwave whines a long.
From what I understand (and there’s a better explanation hereabouts), its the charger converting 240 to 400 volts is distorting the power supply’s sine wave and that causes devices with large wound core transformers to resonate.
I guess you’ve a modern flat screen tv, so perhaps its the transformer in the sound amplifier that’s picking it up.
May 11, 2015 at 21:36 #17383It is a newish flat screen. Its own speakers are disabled, as it’s plugged into a soundbar.
It’s very strange… makes me wonder what affect the charger might have on the rest of the things in the house :/
May 11, 2015 at 21:51 #17389Wonderful things is chargers,
I am a Geek Amateur Radio person and you think hearing your charger coming through your tv is bad you want to hear the Plasma tv’s come through my Radio… Aaarrrgghhhh..
And other stuff like drills, Tumble dryers etc etc, all out there destroying our fun lol.
No people are seeing what we have to put up with doing our hobby,
Mine comes through the cheap tv upstairs but not the LG down stairs. It does beg to wonder what sort of testing the Zoe goes through, Bare in mid its the Zoe that has the charger not the wall box.
My neighbour moaned to me about hearing the high pitch noises at night when he is trying to sleep, Funny how i never moan at him when he talks to me and his hearing aid is roaring out a high pitch tone..
😉
May 11, 2015 at 21:55 #17390I’ve a Denon amp that has a big transformer, so the next time I charge I’ll see if that picks up anything.
May 12, 2015 at 07:30 #17399I charge overnight – while asleep – problem solved 🙂
May 12, 2015 at 09:29 #17410I have a pir night light on my landing that whistles while the car is charging.
May 12, 2015 at 10:49 #17415If you un-plug the sound bar, do you still get the whistling from the TV’s own speakers? If you can work out where the whistling is getting into the system it might be worth putting a filter on the mains lead to see if it reduces it.
May 12, 2015 at 13:04 #17418Surely it’d be better to filter at the charger end? If the charger can interfere with stuff, why isn’t that already part of the charger? :/
