The special ‘top up’ cable for the ZOE

Today I received my ‘top up’ cable, or the granny charging cable as it is being called by some. Not only does this mean that yes, the cable does indeed exist, but it also means I have an extra charging option when I make my trip to the UK starting tomorrow.

In Belgium the cost was €737. Not cheap for a cable that you will use as little as possible, but especially not cheap if you consider that the cable is supposed to come standard with every ZOE in the future.

In the box you will find
– The cable with on one side the domestic socket, on the other side the Type 2 connector and in between a control unit with 3 indicator LEDs.
– An extra cable storage bag (identical to the one that comes with the car)
– An instruction manual in English, French, German and Spanish.

In the manual there are a lot of things they tell you to look at before using a socket, but of course on the road this will not always be possible. I hope the control unit is smart enough to detect problems and prevent damage, because I will not always be able to check the thickness of the cable the socket is attached to, or the kind of differential used among other things.

I also wish the control unit (or the car) had a way to control the amount of current drawn to prevent problems.

I have yet to test the cable, but there you have it: it exists, and if you want one, contact your Renault dealer, they might be able to help you out, just as mine was.

@buzzar and @andyfras – how are the cables? Do they work? I’m beginning to think that having one might be a useful item as a backup, but the costs of the Renault cable are prohibitive.

I use my home-made cable every week when visiting the MiL. It tops up at the about 7% per hour. I’ve had it trip out occasionally, but I now switch it on first, let it run through its checks, then finally plug it into the car – it has not tripped since doing it this way.

and appears to be switchable between 6 or 10 A? I wonder if that is for cars with smaller batteries like Smart ED? The charger losses on Zoe must be tremendous at 6A!

@timbo all charging fine after an initial RCD trip-out and reset.
The unit is switchable between 6A and 10A and as you can see with Zoe’s charge at 91% it reports 2hr 20minutes to full at 10A.
A very well made and rugged unit 🙂

@buzzar thanks for this. So, at 10A the remaining 2kWh will take over 2 hours to deliver? But our usual 32A charging should take in the region of 20 mins shouldn’t it?

So are these losses at 10A typical across all SOC then, or is it just because we’re seeing the end of the charging process and the battery rebalancing?

I would say a large chunk of the 2hr 20 minutes was taken up by the usual battery cell conditioning and equalisation as Zoe’s charge indicator stayed at 99% for about half an hour before reporting !00% and full charge!

I think it would definately be handy (though not essential) to have this (3 pin) cable and failed to negotiate it with the purchase of our Zoe this weekend.

It is however available as an option for approx £500 from dealers in the UK.
