This is not super scientific, I know, but yesterday when I was on another 150 mile trip using a variety of chargers I waited until they were settled into their maximum charging rate, all charging from a base of 15-20% capacity, and then did a simple measurement. Here is what I found for a 1% battery increase:

CYC Rapid Charger (the combo AC/DC charger) = almost 1 minute
Chargemaster 22kW at Renault dealer = 40 seconds
Ecotricity rapid charger = 20 seconds

The CYC chargers are really starting to irritate me as these are the ones I have most access to, but they are just so slow in comparison to Ecotricity!

Apologies for not doing it properly as Trevor has done… full of the man-flu! Next time…

    hi,

i’ve had this issue a lot recently but mostly with rapid chargers. my car has just come out the workshop today after renault changed the BCP (battery charging pack) as they identified this had several errors.

the renault mechanic also told me that the BCP fitted in my car was an early “mark 1” and that a new “mark 2” was now standard factory fit in all ZOE’s.

i am yet to test the new BCP at a rapid charger to be able to confirm if this in fact fixed the issue…

    Hello again,
My latest issue is that Zoe won’t charge except at home. Before Christmas I did successfully charge it at a Source London point, but last week and again today I tried in vain to get it to charge. I phoned the Source London people who verified that the charging point was working correctly. When I plugged the cable in to both both the car and the charger point, the charger first displayed that it was charging, but the car said ‘on-going checks’ – and then ‘battery charging impossible’……
Any thoughts gratefully received, as ever.
    Thanks, Marcus

I’ve been looking at home ESS that have begun appearing on the market. The problem is that they are all still pretty expensive, so the pay-back on investment is long. I guess that prices will fall in time, but with the approach of sunnier months I can’t help wondering if it’s not about time to take the plunge…

Pity those of us who were pioneers right at the start, pay more for our battery hire than newcomers and can’t avail of the cheaper rate.
I also think its a shame that “Vatman and Zoe” charge the full 20% on battery hire and on my purchase of solar PV,while oil, gas, coal, gas and electricity is only charged at 5%.
Not much encouragement from a green government?

I am actively looking to buy a home energy storage system (ESS) or possibly make my own (like Christophe Hubert’s DIY ESS).

I recently tracked the sale of a wrecked Nissan LEAF with a friend at work who also has solar PV. Its battery pack would be large enough to make anything up to half a dozen ES systems. Bidding started at £1k, but we decided to proceed no further once it passed £4k.

Another one has appeared, so I’ll be watching this one in the same way:

Yep, that was exactly my beef when I found an i3 charging at a rapid charger last weekend with a regular 7 kW charger vacant right next to the rapid charger. Not only was it blocking the rapid charger from others who could use the additional current (us!), but it could be there for ages if the battery was low!

I got a decent rate for a charge at an Ecotricity charger at Scotch Corner yesterday – 18% to 88% in 29 mins (c 32kw/hr) – although the estimated charge time when I plugged in was over an hour.

I’ve also noticed that the battery conditioning is taking a lot longer when at home (I charge outside) in the cold. Last nights charge saw the car taking c7kw/hr as usual (2 hours last night), then it slowly ramped down to 2.5kw/hr over the period of an hour. Then another 2 hours at 2.5kw/hr. Total charge time last night was 5hr (from 31% to 100%).

The explanation offered by farblue makes sense to me. I’d love to see a graph of the charge rate against time for 7, 22 and 43kw chargers.

Here is the second of my video blogs on ZOE life. Last weekend I drove from Aberdeen to the Glasgow area and back, a total distance of 348 miles, all using public charging.

The exec summary is that the journey was easily enough done, and far far cheaper than my previous car, but it took at least twice the time, perhaps nearer three times the time. My total driving time was around 9 hours over the weekend, but the amount of time spent “travelling” was considerably longer.

ZOE and I used a variety of chargers, recharging some seven times (not including my charges before I left and on return), using CYC, Ecotricity, Chargemaster and a Renault dealer charger.

I found huge variety in charging rate, raising lots of questions about how the charger works, what the battery chemistry is doing, what limits the chargers impose and what the car imposes on the rates.

I used two CYC rapid chargers, and found that the charge rate was far below expectations, around 18kW/h maximum as I have mentioned elsewhere. The Chargemaster 22kW charger at the Renault dealer was noticeably faster, clearly running at its capacity rate. Fastest of all was the Ecotricity charger which must have been offering 43kW or thereabouts (a 3% to 100% recharge in an hour).

But I also noticed oddities. At the very same Ecotricity charger the following day I recharged from around 50% to 100% and it took about one hour twenty minutes. Make sense of that one.

I am also concerned about what CYC are doing as it seems as though their rapid chargers are very constrained, and I wonder if this is indeed because of compatibility issues that others have reported here. When you are relying on the CYC rapid chargers, the difference between 18kW/h and 43kW/h charging makes a huge difference to time expended on the journey. I think if every charger I had stopped at had provided full rapid AC rates then I could have saved two hours of travelling time. That would be really nice.

The car is going back to the dealer next week to have them check the charging in case there does seem to be a glitch with the car. They are also going to fix the R-Link mapping issue I am having (thanks andyfras for the link about making a backup. I will!), and they will fit the DAB radio add-on. I’ll let you know how that works when I get the car back.
