I totally agree with you, it normally takes about 4 times the energy to produce it, you need a very expensive infrastructure, a safety issue, also a range issue, hugely expensive technology and other associated problems. However this article seems rather different, as it doesn’t really take energy but plants to produce the hydrogen apparently. It seems like a much more efficient manner to produce it, and after all it’s all solar powered. The instant refueling is what makes the difference compared to charging. Aviation, where I work in, still needs a solution for the long term. I think hydrogen might have a solution, if it can be produced without needing a huge amount of energy. In this case the efficiency is actually more than 100 precent (using low energy waste heat will create hydrogen that has more energy), a net gain! That sure sounds like a game changer to me.

It probably doesn’t provide easy solutions that will trump battery cars, at least not for the next 10 years or so. But it does sound promising. Of course by that time we’re sure to see big advances in nano-tech batteries and capacitors as well.

Added a 3 part detailed review from Foro Coches Eléctricos with some new information on battery cooling etc. – recommended.

    Hi all 🙂

I’ve been looking at the monthly battery rental prices for the Zoe and noticed the additional mileage charge is 2.5p/mile. Has it occurred to anyone else that this is significantly cheaper than the monthly price step for the mileage options published on the prices page?

For instance, I will need a package for ~ 15,000 miles a year as I do a lot of driving. Estimating based on the current increments it is likely this could be about £109/month (on a 36+month lease). However, if I chose the 7,500 mile package (again on 36+ month) and just paid for the additional mileage at the states 2.5p/mile then the monthly cost is only £86.

    The maths: ((0.025*7500)/12)+70 = 85.625 (or about £86)

0.025 is the price in pounds for the additional mileage, the 7500 is the additional mileage over the original 7500 mile package, 12 is the number of months and the 70 is the monthly price of the original 7500 mile package.

Does anyone know more about this?

For reference, the official additional mileage cost if you upgrade from 10500 miles a year to 12000 miles a year (an average of 125 miles a month) is £8 a month which works out at 6.4p/mile.

I came across a couple of interesting snippets of news about Zoe’s battery this week. Battery Available to Buy According to Fleet News, Renault boss C

I don’t have anything to add – except to reiterate that I don’t believe it. It would make no sense for Renault to do it. They have invested a fortune in developing the Zoe and need to get that money back at the current range/price point before making any changes.
Also they have just had a massive launch where they have paid for hundreds of journalists to fly to Lisbon, stay in hotels, and test drive the Zoe. They have all gone away and written up their views of the Zoe, most of them headlining the range. That’s a pretty good indication that no new range information is coming from Renault for a year or more, otherwise they’ve massively shot themselves in the foot.

The only way it could make sense longer term is if the battery has twice the range but is compatible with the current system (though it’s hard to imagine how that’s physically possible). Then they could offer an upgrade to the battery lease – something like twice the range for twice the price (i.e. 200 mile range for £200 per month). The problem with that is that no-one would take it – at the current price I can commute and occasionally go further for about the price of an ICE. At twice the cost I could occasionally go even further, but that’s too high a price to pay.

Are there any sources cited for the better battery rumour? I’m sincerely hoping that if there is a better battery that it is compatible with the existing Zoe, and that those of us paying the lease fee will get the new battery for free, if it exists at all.

It’d be rather annoying if an improved battery was incompatible with the existing car.

Hmmmn, thats strange, do you mind me asking what the figures were that you seen, I was informed that with say £500 deposit it was going to be about £340 + battery lease, which I thought would’ve been more for a HP purchase than a PCP, some others on Leaftalk reckoned about £230/240 including the battery lease.

I mean with deliveries due to start in June, and some customers who have orders in may well be looking for the lease figures doesn’t give much chance to think about it, or look at other avenues.
