This is my first post on your forum and well done with what looks to be a very thorough site.

I have just ordered my New ZOE, A Black Intens with Armrest and DAB (I managed to get them the throw in the Metallic paint for free but couldn’t manage the DAB, Test Match Special is a must). Very excited to get it. We are moving into a new build property in April so will hold off till then to get it.

Question: I am going to have British Gas install a home charger. As the property is still being built what do I need to make sure is in the Garage to allow easy installation? Also can we still upgrade to the faster charger or is this as standard and is it worth it?

    Many thanks

    Hi

I have just ordered the exact same thing the dealer seemed a bit unclear on the DAB what sort of money was it and did you get any form of reference for it.

Regarding the charger I am having my charger fitted on tuesday and have asked for the 32amp version if that can fit it, so I can let you know what is needed.

tim – welcome! The standard ‘free’ charger installed by BG and paid for by Renault is 30A, 7kW rather than the standard free BG charger which is 16A. There isn’t a faster option than 7kW (3.5-4 hours for a full charge), unless you have 3 phase supply available.

That information is probably all you need for the garage, i.e. it needs at least a 32A supply (ideally 40A? as it runs for a long time) and it probably wants its own dedicated cable and breaker.

Of course, if it’s a double garage you should get two installed!

Many thanks and sorry for the slow reply.

The DAB was £240 and that is about all I know about it. Would be great to hear how anyone else is finding it.

I have been trying to negotiate with our builder to fit in the required cable now before the British Gas installation lottery begins. Thanks for the info about the 32A supply. The difficulty I will have is connecting it directly to the main distribution board without disruption or ruining the front of the house…

I’m getting DAB fitted this week. I ordered it as soon as I heard about it here, but the parts had not arrived at the dealer until last week. Once I get to grips with it, I’ll put up a wee video so others can see whether they want to order it up.

Just a suggestion: while it is still in-build, you could ask for a 30A spur (ask for 6mm^2 cable) to be routed to roughly where you want the charging station, and ask for it to go on its own RCD. Just have it terminated in a junction box for now. Then it would be a simple matter to wire up the charging station to that spur without any messing around at all.

You’d end up paying for that spur, which would otherwise be covered by the grant/installation, but it might not add up to much while the electrics are being put in and might mean you get exactly what you want and need, rather than a bodge.
