Electric Car Guide
Thanks to Camden Council, the Energy Saving Trust and Green-Car-Guide.com for a video that gives a good background to electric cars and hybrids. The rest of this site concentrates on fully electric vehicles.
Pros and Cons
There are many reasons why there is an increasing interest in electric cars. The main reasons are clear:
- No carbon dioxide emissions in use, and hence less climate change
- No other pollution in use (such as nitrogen oxides, particulates, and carbon monoxide)
- Quietness
- Improved performance – typically faster acceleration than an equivalent internal combustion engine (ICE) car
- Cheap to fuel
There are also other benefits that are perhaps not so obvious
- Smoothness, due to not requiring a gearbox
- Not needing to fuel up at a petrol station – every day the car is fully fuelled when you get in it
- Much higher reliability (fewer parts to go wrong, and electric motors in particular are very reliable compared to an ICE)
- Lower maintenance costs (no need for oil changes, brakes wear out much more slowly, etc.)
The main disadvantages should, of course, not be ignored:
- Generally either a higher price to purchase, or an additional battery lease as with the Zoe (because car batteries remain very expensive)
- Shorter range (typically 80 to 120 miles between charges, though the Tesla can go up to 300 miles)
