So now I await a call from Western Power Distribution to arrange to have an isolating switch fitted.
Can you report back on what that costs Fred? Western Power are same distributor as here. Like Harters above, I have to come up with some of the leg work myself. Not sure whether to have the block pave drive lifted, cable laid and driveway relaid. I know after the floods of 2012 how expensive it is to have that done!
Also, could someone take a picture of the fuse board after they have added the new circuit? I want to see how strict they are with sticking to the right rating / type of breakers!
May 22, 2015 at 10:22 #18118You guys have got me worried now, Picking Zoe up Monday, BG coming to (hopefully) instal Tuesday afternoon, we recently had a new kitchen fitted which required new distribution box with MCBs and RCDs hope that meets requirements, cable to garage looks pretty hefty so fingers crossed that’s ok too !!
May 22, 2015 at 10:28 #18119The regs state a “Type A RCD or RCBO should be fitted”, but from some of the pictures and comments I have seen this isn’t being adhered to by all installers.
The reason it is in the regs is to protect the user against a fault on the DC side of the vehicles electrics as well as protect against AC faults.
May 22, 2015 at 10:45 #18122The BG guy said that he hasn’t been able to any installs this week due to peoples wiring/switching etc not being suitable.
May 22, 2015 at 10:50 #18123I tried to edit my post but it wouldn’t allow me.
One of the main things is that the circuit has to be unprotected i.e. no RCD as they have to fit their own RCD and as the link about states, having two RCD in the circuit can cause problems.
May 22, 2015 at 12:31 #18124My installer noted it was a pleasant surprise to be able to do the survey & install in one visit!!
My 8 year old fuse box is 50% RCD 50% non RCD, there was a spare slot on each so he chose the non RCD side for the reason you stated.
Pics of my install are in the Rented House thread.
May 23, 2015 at 05:52 #18171There’s a very helpful training guide from British Gas “The Installation of Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment” by Ray Garrow. Does anybody know how to get it and permission to put it on here?
Its got some technical terms in it that might need some further explanation for those not acquainted with electrical engineering jargon but it would be a good starting point for understanding the requirements for a successful install.
For example, if BG had told me that I had to have a mains isolator switch between the meter and the supply I could have had one installed weeks ago.May 23, 2015 at 07:46 #18176What’s the cost of having an isolator fitted Fred?
May 23, 2015 at 09:44 #18184I assume the extra isolator is only needed if no suitable point can be found on the main fuse board.
May 23, 2015 at 10:06 #18187My isolator was fitted by BG as part of the installation, but that was nearly 2 years ago and they seem more picky now.
