AJ / Zoe Al
I recently had the BG charge point installed. I was asked to get an isolator fitted prior to the install.
I arranged for BG to fit the isolator as a cost of £40, however when the engineer arrived to do the work he said don’t worry BG don’t charge to fit isolator switch and sure enough I have never had a bill through. He said under health and safety all houses should have one. It stops electricians needing to pull the main supply fuse (which they are not allowed to do) when working on your fuse box. He told me all new builds now have these switches.
Apparently the charger installers won’t work on your consumer unit whilst its still live hence the need for the isolator switch.
I can post a picture of the switch if you want.

June 1, 2015 at 18:39 #18938Well I am pleased to say that my Charge Point was installed by BG (P H Jones) today and I am really pleased with the install.
I had a complete new independent supply put in by an NIC EIC approved electrician direct from our external meter box to our detached garage. He did a great job of routing the cable and so neatly too and for a very reasonable fee especially considering I had to have 28 metres of 6mm armoured cable!!
Have to say that all the communications I have had with BG have been a positive one.
Now I just have to wait another 19 days for ZOE to arrive 🙂
June 1, 2015 at 19:16 #18942Western Power Distribution turned up at noon prompt – they said PM – and the isolator switch is fitted. How these guys can do this work in the confined space under the stairs amazes me. British Gas (PH Jones) return on Wednesday afternoon.
No indication of cost from WPD yet, but I’m expecting about £50.

June 1, 2015 at 22:10 #18956Hi, Haters,
Can I ask how much you where charged I was quoted £500 for 20 meters of extra and cable and the extra time involved for the install.
June 1, 2015 at 22:13 #18957I’ve just had a new cable put in to my garage too, of a similar length, but mine had to go overhead (Catenary wire) as way too many obstacles at ground level – and the run would have been twice the length.
The RCBO to my garage is now rated at 40A, which is within the current carrying capacity of 6mm cable over a 30M distance. Voltage drop is about 11 volts if it was run at maximum load (unlikely) so is within spec.
All I need is my car now – which has been delayed. Am asking for compensation as I wasn’t told until the day before and had made plans for transport etc, taken out insurance etc etc.
June 1, 2015 at 22:18 #18958Can’t edit my post. Voltage drop is about 8v at maximum load, so for our purposes about 4 or 5v if using a 32A charger.
