I started with the fact that it was a Renault Zoe electric car. The NFU underwriter was contacted and confirmed that the battery was covered. Then, only after they had our motoring history did it come up with £450 and “vehicle unacceptable”. Price is unacceptable too!
I would also seem that the whole of greater Bristol is a no-go area for the NFU, including Thornbury, where the local NFU office is, and Thornbury is surrounded by agricultural businesses.
May 28, 2015 at 08:54 #18595CIS Motor (Cooperative Insurance) do not insure electric vehicles.
May 28, 2015 at 11:04 #18606Under the topic “The battery and insurance” I’ve added the result of my enquiry to the Renault Finance ZE team:
The battery cost is £6,160 + VAT or £7,392 incl VAT, and this is the value that should be given to the insurers.Depending on how you apply their depreciation that becomes:
month 13 £6,652.80 (90% of £7,392)
month 25 £5,913.60 (80% of £7,392) or £5,987.52 (90% of previous year’s value)
month 37 £5,174.40 (70% of £7,392) or £5,388.77 (90% of previous year’s value)
month 49 £4435.20 (60% of £7,392) or £4,849.89 (90% of previous year’s value)And if the insurance company don’t pay then the you do.
May 28, 2015 at 18:14 #18630My wife was already with Direct Line and so she went through a change of car with them rather than a new quotation, which I had done. She made it very clear that there are two components to the Zoe each subject to its own finance agreement, a PCP on the car and a lease on the battery, giving them the prices for the car and for the battery. After checking the call centre operator confirmed that both were covered, that a note to this affect would be added to the policy, and that once changeover had taken place the new policy cover would be confirmed by letter. Lets hope its true.
Just in case anybody thinks I’m unduly pessimistic, my wife’s previous car was totalled while parked, empty, in a lay-by on a quiet minor road. The lady driving the VW that demolished another car as well before having a good try at knocking down a tree had a “medical incident”. She survived, and so did the tree, but 3 cars did not.
June 1, 2015 at 19:30 #18944This is getting frustrating. Told by the Renault ZE team that Renault Insurance would cover the car and the battery including GAP insurance I foolishly phoned Renault ZE insurance 0800 500 3108 and 45 minutes (@ 8p a minute) later am no further forward, because the broker I was put through doesn’t know about battery cover and certainly doesn’t do GAP. I was referred back to the dealer who offers Renault GAP but only back to invoice and excluding the battery.
I know Indi isn’t surprised by Renault.
What I can’t understand is how, if what the dealer says is true, hundreds of people appear to have leased batteries without being troubled by having a potential liability of up to £7,392 uninsured.
June 1, 2015 at 20:30 #18948@fred Bristol do you want me to get you a number for the NFU. I know they are expensive but it’s great cover.
June 1, 2015 at 20:46 #18950Hi Samsam
Thanks, but as I mentioned earlier NFU won’t cover electric vehicles in the greater Bristol area. Its a “Red Zone”, a nogo area.June 1, 2015 at 20:53 #18951My wife’s uncle used to be the ceo. I’m sure I can get it sorted.
June 13, 2015 at 11:12 #19519Due to pick up my Zoe on Wednesday and have just sorted out my insurance.
I went with Aviva who were truly excellent and have written a clause into the policy that states they will replace the batteries/power supply in connection to the insured 2015 Renault ZOE EV DYNAMIQUE INTENS (XX XX XXX) in the event of an accident, if written off or stolen.
The total of the policy with myself and my partner is £229 less £70 cashback (already confirmed) = £159
Although its a great price I was only paying £218 with Saga for a £40,000 Audi Q5 😀
Guess thats the price you pay for the unknown 🙂
Very happy and waiting patiently for Wednesday to arrive.
June 13, 2015 at 11:39 #19521Picked up my Zoe this week.
Insurance is through Admiral with the car @ 15000 & battery @7500 for a total insurance figure of 22500. Likewise I have a separate letter confirming that both items are covered within the policy.
Fully Comp was 175.49 which covers the two of us and includes Legal Exps cover.
